Abstract

Canola (Brassica napus L. var. oleifera) and carinata (Brassica carinata A. Braun) are economically important oilseed crops, driven by the demand for biofuels and the diversification of winter cropping systems in southern Brazil. Nitrogen fertilization is one of the main factors influencing the growth and yield of these species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of canola (Diamond and Nuola 300) and carinata (Nujet 350 and Nugreen 60) cultivars under different nitrogen sources (liquid urea and ammonium sulfate), in addition to a control without supplementary nitrogen. The experiment was conducted in Ijuí, RS, in 2025, in a randomized complete block design in a 2 × 3 factorial scheme, with four replications. Morphological variables (plant height and height of insertion of the first silique) and yield components (number of siliques per plant, number of grains per silique, grain weight per plant, and grain yield per hectare) were evaluated. In canola, nitrogen sources significantly influenced plant height and the height of insertion of the first silique, with greater growth under liquid urea, without a significant effect on yield. For carinata, there was no effect of nitrogen sources on yield components, only differences between genotypes for plant height and height of insertion of the first silique. Under the edaphoclimatic conditions of the study, agronomic performance was more associated with the intrinsic characteristics of the species than with the nitrogen source applied.
