Abstract

The present study aimed to produce, characterize and evaluate the application of corn starch-based biofilms, with or without glycerol, in the post-harvest preservation of Anthurium andraeanum cv Tropical. The films were formulated with 3%, 5% and 7% starch, with or without the addition of 30% glycerol in relation to the mass of starch. Samples of the filmes were characterized in terms of thickness, solubility, water vapour permeability (WVP) and molecular interaction by Fourier Transformed InfraRed spectroscopy (FTIR). The biofilms were applied to the spats by immersion, and their longevity was monitored and assessed daily using a pre-established grading scale. The data obtained was used to calculate the area under the curve (AUC) and subjected to regression analysis. The results showed that the films with glycerol had greater thickness and solubility, influencing water absorption. As for the preservation of anthuriums, the coatings with 3% and 5% starch were the most effective, extending shelf life by up to three days compared to the control. Films with 7% starch, regardless of the presence of glycerol, were less effective, with early signs of degradation. The biofilms showed potential for the post-harvest preservation of Anthurium cv. Tropical, being a sustainable alternative to replacing plastic packaging and mitigating environmental impacts.
